The Inner Spiral: Journey to The Sacred Center

Inner spiral is the act of refinement.

The “Inner Spiral” is not just a rotation of the thighs; it is a return to the source. The technical precision of Anusara yoga gives us a blueprint on how to address the urgent need for collective social healing. Its principles compel us to open to Grace, then do the work to not only create stability, but to transform into radiance. The methodology creates a great structure for how to express yoga poses from the inside out, and how a society needs to ground in Source in order to mature into a life-affirming way of being. I believe this approach can be used to place an off-the-mat emphasis on the need to shift our perspective from “correct alignment” to “living as a sacred vessel.” The Anusara yoga methodology gives us a practice to emulate as a blueprint for a creating, refining and expanding into a better world.

The Inner Spiral as a template for the inner journey to the heart

In Anusara, the Inner Spiral is an energetic flow that widens the base and softens the pelvic floor, creating a receptivity to the Divine; “spiraling inward” is an act of courage, not just relaxation. It comes from the stability of Muscle Energy and compels us to expand the Grace within. “Muscle Energy” represents our personal boundaries or effort, while “Inner Spiral” represents the softening into community.  When we translate this from the mat to society, it represents the softening of our rigid egoic structures. By “spiraling inward” to our core essence, we dismantle the defensive armor we often carry into our communities. This inner work is the prerequisite for social transformation: we cannot build a flexible, inclusive society if we are internally rigid and disconnected from our own hearts.

Growing into our embodied Sacred Center

Once we have softened our internal armor, we don’t just stay in a state of receptivity; we anchor into our Sacred Center to begin the work of outward expansion. Embodiment asks us to live our clarity and closeness to Source in the every-day experiences of life. As we get more clear about choosing peace, we can re-order our values and be part of the solution to the problems caused by disconnect and wounded hearts.

Each of us is contributing to the evolution of the world when we go inside and cultivate our authentic ways of achieving peace. We are a presence of love and light when we recognize that we are here intentionally. We are creators, participants, and witness to a new and unfolding way for humanity to exist. Our shared inner work combines to form a universal pulse for Organic Expansion, the “shining out” or the outward flow of grace.

Here are Pillars of Practices to help you achieve this:

  • Devotion to the Sacred wherever you can find it
  • Ground into your self and cultivate love for your unique being
  • Cultivate wisdom by listening, exploring and appreciating diversity
  • Reverence for life creates love for others
  • Practice empathy to break down barriers of separation
  • Build family and community through love and inclusivity

When practice becomes simply being a life-affirming being of light, we have transformed. Governed by love and living from the heart we are free to live outside of dogma and unjust laws. Our personal work and authentic living creates a universal desire—an expanding spiral—for creating peace on the larger scale. The yogis called this the “divine dance” or, Lila, in which Spirit comes to know itself. It is the place where struggle is dropped and we surrender to the hand of Grace moving us beyond our limitations.

Societal Growth by Living in Sacred Space

Shifting from “performing” citizenship to “embodying” compassion means cultivating the intelligence and experiences of the group. Movements for justice and peace often burn out when they are fueled solely by anger or external goals. Spiritual devotion (Bhakti) provides the “infinite fuel” necessary for long-term societal evolution, as in contrast to “performative activism.”  Devotion is what prevents burnout as we transform “tasks” into “offerings.”

When we live with a sense of devotion, our actions are no longer just tasks; they are offerings. If we view the person in front of us—whether a friend or a stranger—as an extension of the Sacred Center, our outward expression naturally shifts toward kindness, patience, and equity. Devotion transforms activism into a “sacred duty” (Dharma), ensuring that our efforts to change the world are rooted in love rather than resentment. Our goal grows from personal growth to societal transformation from the inside out. This creates Sacred Space in the “beingness” of living on all fronts.

The concept of “Sacred Space” is often relegated to temples or yoga studios, but the true transformation happens when we treat the entire world as a sanctuary. Movements and philosophy are hollow if they do not lead us back to the Heart; similarly, a society is hollow if it prioritizes efficiency over the sanctity of the human spirit.

How We Transform Through the Heart:

The authentic alignment for transformation is spiraling into our core so we can move outwardly with love and grace.  Just as we align our bones for physical stability, we must align our values with our actions. A society in “heart-alignment” is one where policy reflects empathy. The new world we can create is based on serving the greater good of all beings as social-economic distinctions level out. When the people matter more than generating exorbitant profits at the expense of others, and the planet, we are in heart-alignment.

As we strengthen our individualized self-love we strengthen our universal love of Self, the Spirit that connects us all. Living as our Higher Self we raise the vibration all around us and contribute in ways both great and small. This inside-out approach to personal and social transformation builds from stability and refinement. It is what makes it possible to “shines out,” which is often extoled in the Anusara of linking heart to physical expression.

The shining out is living from the radiance of the Heart—created by going within for Self-discovery—then expressed as the “Radiant Spirit” in action. When we do the inner work to find our core essence, our very presence becomes a stabilizing force for others.  By returning to the heart, we find a steady point of reference in a chaotic world, the Sacred Center as a compass. This allows us to respond to societal crises with clarity and grace rather than knee-jerk reactivity.

Summary

When we arrive at that Sacred Center, we realize that the “inner” and “outer” worlds are not separate. The “Sacred Center” is the bridge where the internal and external become one.    To heal the world, we must first inhabit our own bodies and hearts with total devotion. Only then does our outward expression become a catalyst for a more beautiful, aligned, and heart-centered society.
